Getting around
Da Nang

Tap any topic to open it. These six things will get you comfortable in the city from day one.

Download the Grab app before you arrive (it's the local Uber). Use GrabCar for groups or luggage and GrabBike for quick solo hops — both are cheap, reliable and air-conditioned, and you see the price up front. A short ride across An Thuong is usually 12,000–75,000 VND ($0.50–3). Good alternatives if a car is busy: Xanh SM (electric), Maxim and InDrive. Tip: avoid random taxi drivers who approach you on the street, even ones wearing Grab jackets — always book in the app.
Da Nang International Airport is only about 15 minutes from the villa. Skip the drivers calling out for taxis — walk to the official Grab Station a few metres outside the arrivals exit and order in the app. The ride to An Thuong is roughly 120,000 VND (~$5). For longer trips (Hoi An, Ba Na Hills, Hue) a pre-booked private car is far cheaper than Grab. I can arrange one for you — just message me your flight details.
Get a Viettel SIM from the official Viettel store in My An (a short walk away) — it's cheaper than the airport kiosks. Plans start around 100,000 VND/month with generous daily data, plenty for maps, calls and streaming. Vinaphone also has strong coverage here. If your phone supports it, an eSIM is the easiest option of all — you can set it up before you land.
Most cafes, restaurants and shops accept Visa and Mastercard. For cash, use a VP Bank ATM — it doesn't charge a withdrawal fee, while many other ATMs add around 220,000 VND per withdrawal. Keep some small cash for street food, markets and Grab. To exchange currency, Buck Service in An Thuong gives fair rates (~1% fee). A handful of street vendors are cash-only, so it's handy to always carry a little.
A simple motorbike rents from around 150K VND/day (about $40–50/month for longer stays) — the daily rate is handy if you're only here a short while. For regular motorbikes, I recommend Quang Nga Motorbikes on Lê Quang Đạo Street. One thing to know: legally you need a Vietnamese or international driving licence, and police do occasionally check — without the right papers you risk a fine. If you don't have a licence, I recommend renting a 50cc electric bike at Toms Motorbike on An Thượng 29. For short trips around town, the easiest worry-free option is still a GrabBike.
February–May is the sweet spot — warm, sunny and dry, perfect beach weather. June–September is hot and great for swimming. October–January is cooler with some rainy days. One thing to plan around: Tet (Lunar New Year, usually late January or February) when many cafes, restaurants and services close for the holiday — lovely to experience, but stock up beforehand.

A few simple things to know so you arrive relaxed and ready.

Visa

Most visitors need a Vietnam e-visa — apply online before you fly (about $25, up to 90 days). Some nationalities get 45 days visa-free. Sort it well ahead if you're travelling around Tet.

Money

The currency is the Vietnamese đồng (VND). Carry some cash for street food and markets; cards work in most cafes and restaurants. VP Bank ATMs don't charge withdrawal fees.

Language

English is common in An Thuong and tourist spots, less so elsewhere. A few words go a long way: xin chào (hello), cảm ơn (thank you). Google Translate's camera is a lifesaver for menus.

Food to try

Da Nang's own dishes: mì Quảng (turmeric noodles), bánh xèo (crispy crepes), fresh grilled seafood, and the famous coconut & salt coffee — most under $2.

Safety & traffic

Da Nang is very safe. The main thing to learn is the traffic: cross slowly and steadily and the scooters flow around you. Use Grab rather than riding yourself unless you're confident and licensed.

Good manners

Slip off your shoes when entering homes and many shops, and dress modestly at temples. Bargaining is normal at markets (start around half the asking price) — but not in cafes or restaurants.
